DIXON, Iowa — Funeral services for John H. Evans, 80, of Dixon, Iowa, formerly of Davenport, will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, July 17, 2010, at Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church in Davenport. Interment and military honors will follow at Davenport Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will greet friends from 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday, July 16, 2010, at Cunnick-Collins Mortuary in Davenport, and on Saturday from 9 a.m. until service time at the church. A rosary will follow visitation on Friday at 7 p.m. Mr. Evans died on Wednesday, July 14, 2010, at his home in Dixon, Iowa.
John Henry Evans was born on December 3, 1929, in Marion, Iowa, the son of John and Caroline (Cabrnoch) Evans. He graduated from Marion High School with the class of 1948. On June 9, 1950, he married Virginia M. McVey in Marion. Mr. Evans served in the United States Navy during the Korean conflict. Prior to his retirement, he worked for 36 years as a heat and frost insulator out of Union Local 81 of Cedar Rapids, retiring in 1992. Mr. Evans enjoyed traveling, fishing, and woodworking, and was a member of the Dixon American Legion, Post #353.
He is survived by his wife, Virginia Evans of Dixon; a daughter, Karen (Roger) Spratt of Davenport; two sons, John (Debra) Evans and James (Sandra) Evans, both of Davenport; a brother, Raymond Evans of Marion; three sisters, Margaret (Joe) Cook of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Martha and Marlene Evans, both of Marion; 10 Grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Phillip.
Memorials may be made to either Genesis VNA Hospice Association or to St. James Catholic Church in Toronto, Iowa.
The family would like to give a special note of thanks to Genesis Hospice, and most especially to Kate, and, to Dr. Mario Sy and his staff for the wonderful care John had received these past weeks.

August, 8, 2010 | Sign the Guestbook | Email Announcement ILLINOIS CITY, Ill. — A ceremony to celebrate the life of Thomas S. Van Kirk, age 61, of Illinois City, Ill., formerly of Davenport, will be held on Sunday, August 15, 2010, from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Andalusia Lions Club, 302 Second St., Andalusia, Ill. Thomas died on Saturday, July 31, 2010, surrounded by his family after a long and courageous battle with cancer. It was the only competition he ever lost. As was his request, cremation rites have been accorded. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Genesis VNA Hospice or to his grandchildren for future needs at the Andalusia Community Bank.
Thomas Stanley Van Kirk was born on February 15, 1949, to Marvin and Wanda (Lyons) Van Kirk in Davenport. Tom graduated from Davenport West High School in 1967, where he was active in wrestling and football. On January 19, 1973, he was united in marriage to Rosesinda Ellis in Blue Grass, Iowa.
Tom enjoyed coaching Dad’s Club baseball, fishing, playing horseshoes and picks, and watching the Hawkeyes, Bears and Cubs. He especially enjoyed playing with his twin granddaughters after he retired.
Tom was a proud member of the Heat & Frost Insulators Local 81 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, for 37 years. His last job as member of the local was as a union organizer. He dove into this job headfirst and relished doing it until his retirement in 2004. Tom often expressed his gratitude to the union for being able to provide a good life for Sindie and his kids. Tom met and befriended many people in his years as an insulator. He was a true and loyal friend.
Those left to honor his memory include his wife of 37 years, Sindie; his son, Thomas (Kim) Van Kirk of Taylor Ridge, Ill.; his daughter, Rhea (LB) Ontiveros of Milan, Ill., his mother, Wanda Van Kirk of Mesa, Ariz.; his brother, George (Peggy) Van Kirk of Alvarado, Minn.; his sisters, Nancy (Brien) Shannon of Davenport, Trudy Van Kirk of Alvarado, Judy (Don) Stoffers of Mesa; his sister-in-law, Sandy Van Kirk of Davenport; his grandaughters, Bella and Olivia Ontiveros; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father, Marvin Sr., and brother, Marvin Jr.
The family would like to thank his closest friends for being there and being a part of his life until the very end.

Robert Stout

Robert J. Stout, 89, a resident of Kewanee Care Nursing Home, formerly of Atkinson, passed away on Thursday, Oct. 7, 2010, at the home.

Graveside funeral services celebrating his life will be held 11 a.m. Monday at Evergreen Memory Gardens, Kewanee. The Rev. Jerry Rafalko will officiate. There will be no visitation. Memorials may be left to the Kewanee Relay for Life. Vandemore Funeral Home, Atkinson, is assisting the family with the arrangements.

Robert was born on June 2, 1921, in Medon, Tenn., the son of Dolphus and Nellie Carter Stout. He was united in marriage to Margie B. Livingston on March 6, 1947, in Amarillo, Texas; she preceded him in death on March 21, 2009.

Bob had been employed many years as an asbestos coverer for the Pipefitter Union, retiring in 1976.

Survivors include daughter-in-law, Becky Montgomery, Rock Island; two granddaughters, Jane and Emily Stout; a niece, Marcia Dragolovich, Prophetstown; as well as other nieces and nephews.

Robert was preceded in death by his wife, Margie, and one son, Robert Stout.
